Born in 1923, José Cobles aka Puerto Plata (after the town of his birth) is a veteran of the guitar tradition of the Dominican Republic. When he was 24 years old he managed to save enough money to buy a guitar and has been a musician ever since. Living in Santiago he would most often perform in the La Joya neighbourhood, where classic acoustic bachata, merengue and boleros were the favourite soundtrack in bars and brothels. During the Trujillo dictatorship (1931-61) Dominican guitar music (associated with the working class) was suppressed by the regime. Consequently there are precious few recordings of bachata from that era. Puerto Plata recorded his debut album aged 84 – Mujer De Cabaret – followed by Casita De Campo in 2009 and he has been much celebrated as a direct link to the early bachata repertoire. // REVIEWS
